The original restoration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthplace was the first birth home of a Black American to gain recognition by the National and State Register of Historic Places. The two-story Queen Anne style framed house was built in 1895. Exterior restoration detailed the house to the period of Dr. King’s birth. The interior was also restored to the original furnishings that the family utilized at the time Dr. King was born. Mrs. Martin Luther King Sr. provided the necessary input to ensure that wall paper, carpet, paints and other decorative aspects were, if not authentic, then as similar to the original decor as possible.
