Located in Atlanta’s Premier Park, Piedmont Park, this parking deck is designed to blend in with the existing environment. The major design challenge was to design a 7-level parking structure that would not be visible in the existing historic park. The major design challenge was to design a 7-level parking structure that would not be visible in the existing historic park. This was achieved by incorporating the deck into an existing hill, and screening the front face of the deck with a landscape berm. In addition, the structure is entered from two different sides since it will serve Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Again, the design team of J. W. Robinson & Associates, Inc. and Jova Daniels Busby created two distinct entrances; 1) for the Botanical Gardens off of Piedmont Road, a major street and 2) Monroe Drive through a tunnel as not to compromise the existing pedestrian pathway. Due to site constraints in this historic park the deck is a pour-in-place concrete structure. This design resulted in a landscape-green structure blending into the existing surroundings and appearing invisible to park visitors. The project won the “2011” American Institute of Architects Citation Design Award.
