The renovation and addition of the Auburn Avenue Research Library for African- American Culture and History consisted of the total interior modification of the existing spaces including, research, archival, gallery, and support spaces. A new state-of-the-art auditorium which seats over 270 patrons with a balcony and functional stage was also added to the existing facility.The auditorium greatly enhances and simplifies the production of special presentations, lectures and other performances, with high-tech media devices, theatrical and house lighting integrated into the programmable AV control system.
Renovations to the existing building included an author’s/writer’s lounge, educational center equipped with overhead projectors, AV controls and large format touch screen, gallery, reference and research areas, an archives area with AV viewing rooms, reader’s stations for patrons and various other support and production areas.
J.W. Robinson & Associates, Inc. teamed with The Freelon Group as a joint- venture (JV) for this project.
The project received the 2017 Award of Excellence from the Atlanta Urban Design Commission for Interior Design of Public Spaces, Urban Design & Public Art.
